What are backlinks ?

Backlinks (also known as “inbound links”, “incoming links” or “one way links”) are links from one website to a page on another website. Google and other major search engines consider backlinks “votes” for a specific page. Pages with a high number of backlinks tend to have high organic search engine rankings.

Backlinks are important for both search engines and end users. For the search engines, it helps them determine how authoritative and relevant your site is on the topic for which you rank. Furthermore, backlinks to your website are a signal to search engines that other external websites are endorsing your content.

If many sites link to the same webpage or website, search engines can interpret that content is worth linking to, and therefore also worth ranking higher on a SERP (search engine results page). For many years, the quantity of backlinks was an indicator of a page’s popularity. But today, algorithms (like Google's Penguin update) were created to help with other ranking factors; pages are ranked higher in a Google search based more on the quality of the links that they are getting from external sites and less on quantity of those links.

Examples of Good Backlinks

  • Links from websites with a high domain authority
  • Links from websites with high traffic
  • Links from websites with high page ranks
  • Natural, non-spammy links that occur without solicitation
  • Links that include anchor text to your website that uses important keywords as the link text

Examples of Bad Backlinks

  • Links from your website to completely irrelevant websites (i.e. a fashion designer linking to a dentist)
  • Links from sites with explicit content
  • Links from sites associated with spam or unethical practices
  • Links from sites that are unrelated to your industry
  • Purchased, solicited or unnatural links
  • Links to or from link farms or sites with useless content
  • Broken links
  • Using too many links in your content
